IT ALL STARTED WHEN…

I began crocheting Mandalas and Fractal Shapes to make something fun and I love making them!

One day I thought to attach one Mandala to my wheelchair, but I was a little hesitant thinking about safety challenges.

For example, the yarn getting in my way to push the chair or to do simple tasks. In addition, I thought people could think that I have a "chip on my shoulder". Well, I would not know until I try, right?

One day, I crocheted a Mandala in a hula-hoop and showed it to a large group of crocheters. The post got thousands of likes and many commented me having a great idea attaching the Mandala to my wheels. The Mandala was larger than my wheel, and it was not attached, but it looked like it was.

Later, I went shopping for material to make a bird nest, and to reach some foam I had to move several wire-wreaths out of my way. I rested them next to my rear wheel, then, to put them back to their place, one got stuck in, when I pulled it out, I noticed that it fitted perfectly in the rim. I bought it just to play with it.

When I got home, I tried it and fit perfectly as a hoop, which I called ‘flexible hoop.’ The wire-wreath had 4 hoops attached forming the frame. I removed all the hoops and kept the largest, I crocheted one design, attached it to the flexible hoop, and inserted the piece in the wheel. WOW. I created the first cover.

Then to assess the cover, I went to a shopping center and wheeled around. The cover was very stable, very safe, and comfortable while wheeling. A man walked next to me and said, “I love your wheel covers,” there the wheel covers idea emerged and created the WheelCovers4U.

Since I promised the group members that I was going to show my work, I posted pictures of the Mandalas attached to my wheels... and the response was fantastic. Some even asked me for permission to use my idea, others suggested creating a website, others to write patterns, etc.

That is one of the reasons I created this web to share my crocheted Mandalas and Fractals Shapes to the world. The other reason is to teach how to make them because anything attached to a wheelchair needs close attention to mobility needs. It is not just adding a happy image to the rim. It is about making the person happy and feeling safe and the same time.

Thanks for visiting! :-)
